PARAMEDICS can respond to 999 calls more quickly following the opening of an ambulance station.
Stockton North MP Frank Cook opened the new ambulance station in Billingham yesterday.
The sub-station is in the heart of Billingham, on the Lealholme Road Industrial Estate, and has been converted from an industrial unit.
Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service area manager Allan Grieff said: "For the first time, we're getting our own building, having always shared one in the past.
"The new sub-station is right in the centre of Billingham and means we'll be able to respond quickly to any 999 calls in the town or neighbouring Norton."
The premises include a ground floor garage, rest room and a first floor office, kitchen and toilet.
There will always be either an ambulance or a rapid response vehicle at the station.
Jayne Barnes, the service's chief executive, said: "This sub-station means that an ambulance response will be virtually on the doorstep for the people of Billingham."
