A GROUP that offers support to stroke victims in Derwentside is 25 years old tomorrow.
Consett Stroke Club was formed on February 18, 1981, to help ex-steelworkers who suffered post-stroke speech problems.
Jean Tredgold, secretary, said : "The club helps them remember that they are important people, because when people first have a stroke they think that is the end of everything - but it is not.
"A lot of people can't speak when they come here but they improve when they visit more regularly.
"It is very rare that anyone leaves. We just enjoy each other's company."
Yesterday, members celebrated the success of the group with a buffet lunch and music.
Founder Bill Mullholland died last year, but the group has set up a memorial fund to continue his valuable community work by helping the needy.
The group meets at Community House, Allison Gardens, Consett, from 10am to 1.30pm. Entry is £1.
It is looking for new members and volunteers, especially drivers, to help with the running of the club.
For details, or to make a donation, call Mrs Tredgold on (01207) 581952.
