MARY BUTTERWICK has been to a school to present trophies and plaques to the children who have helped raise thousands of pounds for her charity.
Mrs Butterwick was made an honorary old Barnardian last year, when Barnard Castle School adopted the Butterwick Hospice as its charity.
The school raised £5,000 for the organisation during its annual Barnard Run, and it will be revealed after half-term if this figure has been matched.
Mrs Butterwick said: "It's always a pleasure to come to an event like this to give the children some encouragement.
"Being active is what life is all about and we are extremely grateful for the support of the school."
Headteacher David Ewart said: "It has been a great competition and I would like to congratulate everyone who has taken part.
"It has been very impressive to see the commitment of our girls and boys, and we are looking forward to collecting in all the sponsorship money, which can make a real difference to a good cause."
Cross-country competitions have been staged at the school every year since 1885, and in 1892 Lord Barnard presented the first Barnard Cup.
About 500 pupils of all ages take part in Barney Bash qualifying heats, held a week earlier, with about 250 of the fastest going through to the final.
Every child taking part in the run through the school grounds and along the River Tees makes a donation.
