THE fiction and poetry available from libraries in North Yorkshire has been assessed as excellent.
The judgement came from the Audit Commission after stock health checks of the county's library and information service.
The checks are designed to help libraries monitor the relevance and depth of their adult fiction and poetry stock.
The new system has been developed to tie in with the Government's framework for the future of public libraries, and addresses sharp criticisms of outdated stock made in a report by library charity Libri in April, 2004.
Executive member for adult and community services, Councillor Chris Metcalfe, said: "We have invested well over the last three years improving the stock in our libraries. It is very pleasing to get national recognition for the investment the county council has made."
