TWO children from Darlington are being given the chance to become the town's mayor and mayoress for the day.
The winners of the annual competition will carry out a day of official visits with the real Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Stella Robson, and her escort, Councillor Frank Robson, on Tuesday, May 10.
Last year's itinerary included a visit to the police station, a VIP lunch, a behind-the-scenes look at Tees Valley Durham Airport and a photo session.
Coun Stella Robson said: "This competition offers a unique opportunity for two children to experience for themselves just what it means to be the first citizen of the borough.
"In the past, this competition has been very popular and I hope many children will enter this year, as this really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance."
Schools in Darlington are being asked if their pupils would like to enter the competition, which is open to all children aged between nine and 11, who live within the Darlington borough boundaries.
To enter, children must write an essay of no more than 250 words on what they would like the Youth Member of Parliament to do to help young people in Darlington.
The subject was chosen to coincide with Darlington's youth elections, which are being held tonight.
Entries should be submitted to David Allaway, Mayoral Support Officer, Mayor's Parlour, Town Hall, Darlington, DL1 5QT before Friday, April 28.
For more information on the competition, call Mr Allaway on (01325) 388363.
