RESIDENTS across Darlington are being urged to sign up to a free 24-hour service designed to help protect homes - and lives - against the dangers posed by flooding.
The Environment Agency's flood warning service tells people living near rivers or the sea that flooding is expected in their area imminently, and that they should take immediate action to protect themselves, their properties and their families.
The warnings can be sent to residents in different ways - by landline telephone, mobile phone, fax or pager - with the receiver deciding how they wish to get their messages.
But although the service has been on offer since 1997, only 45 per cent of households in Darlington are currently registered to receive warnings.
Peter Holmes, Environment Agency flood risk manager, said people are leaving themselves open to danger by not taking precautions.
He said: "The Environment Agency can't stop floods happening, but we can give you the best information to help plan, prepare and deal with flooding."
To register for the service, call 0845 988 1188.
