STUDENT actors are hoping their latest musical production will repeat the success of the last performance they gave at Durham's Gala Theatre.

Durham University Light Opera Group (Dulog) will perform City of Angels in the prestigious venue from tomorrow until Saturday.

The group performed the ever-popular West Side Story there last year and Fame the year before, both productions selling out.

A group spokeswoman said City of Angels was a "musical film noir set in the glamorous, seductive Hollywood of the 1940s", that told the story of a mystery writer struggling to create a screenplay, and his lead character and alter-ego, Stone, a down-on-his-luck private detective.

"Fantasy and reality mix as the two stories begin to invade each other's "reel" and "real" lives.

"The show is fuelled by a scintillating jazz score, delivered by a 25-strong big band performing onstage Chicago-style on a raised podium, and accompanied by a vocal quartet.

"This year, Dulog intends to meet and exceed their past success and this fast-paced and gutsy musical spectacular, City of Angels, promises to do just that."

City of Angels will be performed at 7.30pm each night with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday, at 2pm. Tickets cost £7 to £12, and there is a first night offer of all seats for £6.50. Matinee tickets cost £8. For more details, call the box office on 0191-332 4041.
