MOTORISTS and pedestrians are being targeted by a new initiative to make roads safer.
A leaflet offering a range of useful information and advice on how to prevent and avoid accidents has been produced by Hartlepool Borough Council.
Copies of the free leaflet are available in several public buildings, including the Civic Centre, Bryan Hanson House, in Lynn Street, the York Road library, the tourist information centre and community centres.
Traffic technician Mark Reed said: "Much has been achieved in recent years to make our roads safer, but it is important that we do not become complacent.
"The leaflet aims to focus people's minds on some very important issues, including the importance of always wearing a seatbelt and the need for pedestrians to make themselves readily visible to drivers.
"We also want to reiterate some old messages. For example, drivers should remember that drinking or taking drugs and driving is not only illegal, but also affects your reaction times and increases your chances of being involved in a collision."
The leaflet also contains information about safe cycling and motorcycling.
It also advises people that they can get information on issues such as school crossing patrols, child road safety training, motorcycle training, driver improvement/refresher training courses, child seats and restraints, drink and drug driving and safety cameras by calling the council on (01429) 523590.
