PUPILS at a County Durham primary school have spent two days solving maths problems - and they've enjoyed every minute of it.

For the fourth year running, St Joseph's RC Primary School, in Mill Lane, Gilesgate, Durham City, has staged its Great North Numeracy Fun days.

Pupils aged four to 11 took part and, said teachers, even the school's year six students, who have their Sats just around the corner, were glad of the arithmetical diversion.

Scores of maths posers were presented to the youngsters and this year's challenge was based on the theme of sport.

The emphasis of the project was to show "It's great fun to do maths".

Pupils entered into the spirit of the challenge, completing mathematical puzzles and problems appropriate to their age and ability, and were awarded points for their efforts.

The project was also seen as a means to helping year six students "sharpen up their wits'' before they take their Sats.

Among some of the maths-oriented games and tests were challenges including The Great North Teddy Run, Warm Up Wiggle, Giddy Up, Big Boxer, Ronnie the Rock Climber, Goals Galore and Up and Under.

The school's maths co-ordinator, Joan Curry, said the event had been a success.

"When we asked the children if they had enjoyed taking part, they all cheered and many individual pupils have come up to me to say how much they enjoyed it,'' said Mrs Curry.
