A CROSS-COUNTRY run next month will raise money for an African-based charity.

Entrants will run a 5km course around the grounds of the Maiden Castle Sports Centre, in Durham, and receive a medal on completion.

There is a £5 minimum donation to enter, but there is no limit to what people can give. Runners are encouraged to raise funds for Sport in Action, a non-governmental group based in Lusaka, Zambia.

The group uses sport as a development tool to promote the benefits of physical activity, linking this to health awareness issues such as the prevalence of HIV and Aids.

Dr Peter Warburton, director of Durham University Sport, said: "Durham University has hosted some magnificent events over recent years, including the World Cross Country.

"However, it is particularly pleasing that on this occasion we are working with local partners to put on what we hope will be an enjoyable fun run for all the family."

People can run for time, run for fun, run in fancy dress, or with their friends.

It is organised by Durham University, Durham City School Sport Partnership, Comrades of Children Overseas and Duck, Durham University Charities' Kommittee.

Six students from Durham University will go to Lusaka for a month, during the summer to take part in the various coaching and training initiatives and meet children who will benefit from the funds.

The inaugural Durham Charity 5K Run will take place on Saturday, March 4, beginning at 10.30am.

Entry forms can be obtained from The Graham Sports Centre, Maiden Castle, University of Durham. The closing date is February 24.
