THE son of Jackie Milburn feels his father will be just proud a 'passionate Geordie' has broken his long-standing goal record for Newcastle United.
But, while delighted Alan Shearer has finally gone on to break the 200-goal record, the Milburns at least have one Wor Jackie held haul that Newcastle's current No.9 will not break.
When Shearer grabbed his 201st goal for the Magpies, he overtook Milburn at the top of the club's all-time goalscorer charts after 49-years of the late, great, striker leading the way.
But Shearer, due to retire at the end of season, would have to play on for a few more years if he was to get anywhere near one of predecessors to the No.9 shirt's league total.
Milburn struck 177 goals in 353 appearances for Newcastle in the league, while Newcastle's modern day skipper boasts 143 in 286games for his hometown club.
"Alan will never catch my father's record of league goals," said Jack Milburn Jnr, whose legendary father passed away in 1988. "And I suppose that's the nice thing about this really.
"We are delighted for Alan. I spoke recently to my mother about it and she is just thrilled that a Geordie has gone on to break my father's total.
"But it's also nice to know my father's name will still be associated with one record for some time yet - and I will be surprised if it is ever broken now."
The 38 goals scored by Milburn during the war years have never been officially recorded but have never been forgotten by his son.
Nevertheless Jack Milburn is happy for Shearer to enjoy his time, although he added: "The saddest thing for me is that he has never won anything at Newcastle.
"It's fantastic for him and for the club he has the record but wouldn't it be great to see him, a passionate Geordie, lift some silverware before he does retire? I'm not too hopeful though, are you?"
