THE dangers of fire safety have been a burning issue at a County Durham school
Staff and children at Barnard Castle School are being given a host of vital safety advice.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service's community safety team members, Ian Cockburn and Steve Smith, visited the school to offer advice and guidance on fire prevention.
The firefighters staged a court scene based on a blaze, with pupils playing the parts of firefighter, police officer, defendant, judge and jury.
Every year, more than 400 people die in fatal fires across the UK, and chip pans, smoking materials, candles and electrical faults are the main causes.
"There is a lot of work to be done to make sure we prevent as many fires as possible" said Mr Cockburn.
At the same time, new teaching staff at the school were given fire safety training.
Deputy headteacher Oliver Marlow said: "We take fire safety training very seriously in the school. By inviting our colleagues in the Fire and Rescue Service to come into school, staff and pupils alike are able to gain an important life skill."
