CHILDREN have been eating breakfast at their school thanks to the first club of its kind in Darlington.

Greggs the bakers has opened its first breakfast club in the town at Dodmire Infants and Junior School.

The scheme was opened after chairwoman of governors Sue Wilson heard about a project at a school in Newcastle.

She approached the company, which has provided food, cutlery, plates and toys, to set up the project.

Mrs Wilson, who is inclusion manager at the infant school, said: "It is something that all schools should be striving towards. But it also supports our healthy eating target."

The club was launched in September. The two schools have a total of about 100 children attending the club, which serves cereal, toast and fruit juice.

Officials from Greggs visited the school this week to see the success of the project.

Mrs Wilson said: "It runs so smoothly and we have seen such an impact on the children who have been getting breakfast."
