A 16-YEAR-OLD motocross rider has picked up third place in a national competition.

Michael Haddick, of Darlington, was among 50 youngsters competing in the 125cc Schoolboy Championships.

Michael picked up his trophy this week after jumping his way to third spot over nine races.

All the events took place at Thorne Motocross Club's dirt track, at Armthorpe, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Although many of the competitors have been involved in motocross for several years, Michael took up the sport just over two years ago.

His dad, Don, said: "I got him into it just to keep him off the streets.

"It is a fantastic achievement because quite a few have done it for longer than Michael."

Michael has also competed in Yarm, Cumbria, Northern Ireland and has even been training in Spain.

Mr Haddick is now appealing to individuals or businesses to sponsor his son.

It costs about £5,000 to compete during the year, with the majority of costs going on travelling and entry.

Mr Haddick's business, the Woodworking Centre, Albert Hill, is currently Michael's only sponsor.
