PARENTS have launched an appeal to raise money for specialist science equipment for a newly-opened school.

Youngsters from Evergreen Primary, Bishop Auckland, a purpose-built school for children with special needs, have settled into their new surroundings, but are in need of some modern science equipment.

Chairwoman of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), Val Fairhurst, said that the new school has provided a good setting for the youngsters.

She said: "It is a fabulous building and we cannot believe how well the children have taken to the changes.

"The staff have settled well as well. It is as if they have worked together for years.

"What we need now is to buy equipment that is worthy of these fantastic surroundings.''

The PTA is hoping that local businesses and fundraisers will help in their quest to buy as much equipment as possible for science classes.

She said: "Our children have special needs. They cannot get away with everyday science equipment, they need specialist stuff and that costs money.

"The headteacher is going to give us a wish list and we want to make sure that we get everything on it.''

Anyone who can help the PTA get a head start with its project can contact it at the school on (01388) 459721.
