A CRIME-fighting closed-circuit television system has been praised in a security awards competition.

Derwentside's camera network has been acclaimed for its outstanding use of technology in a G4S Security Services national awards scheme.

The 82-camera system is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by a team of 11 staff.

It has cut crime and disorder in Consett, Stanley and surrounding areas, with 933 arrests recorded over three years, leading to many convictions.

There has been a marked reduction in retail crime, including shoplifting, further reducing the low crime rate in the town.

Created as a joint venture between Project Genesis and Derwentside Council, the system is run by G4S Security Services.

Inspector Andrew McConnell, of Durham Constabulary, said: "From the police perspective, the cameras are a wonderful bonus in gathering evidence and we are grateful for the funding that Derwentside District Council and Project Genesis have provided."

Having won the Best Use of Technology category, the scheme has now been nomited in the regional heats of the British Security Industry Association's Security Officer of the Year Awards.
