A GRANT is being handed to a North Yorkshire canoe club to encourage more disabled people to take up the sport.

Hambleton Paddlers are hoping to help more disabled people to try canoeing and kayaking, thanks to the grant from Natwest Community Fund.

Treasurer David Willis received a cheque for £250 from Natwest representative Alison Scrivens last Sunday at Thirsk Swimming Pool.

Hambleton Paddlers was set up in late 2002 and has nearly 100 members of all abilities, and the money will go towards its community outreach programme.

Frances Allan, of the club, said: "This is a significant amount of money for the club and we are very grateful to Natwest for giving us the opportunity to help disabled people."
