THE public transport difficulties faced by people with learning disabilities have been highlighted to council chiefs.

A petition with about 200 names was handed to the mayor of Middlesbrough, Ray Mallon, by the charity Middlesbrough 1st, which campaigns for the rights of people with learning difficulties.

Handing over the petition, Dave Lowe, of the charity, said: "It highlights that people with learning disabilities can face problems such as bullying and harassment from other passengers, and unhelpful staff who do not take their needs into account.

"This can make using public transport a daunting prospect. We believe that this petition will carry some weight.

"We would like the mayor to use it in his discussions with local transport operators to show that this is a live issue for many people in the town."
