A LITTER clean-up project has been extended into a second week.
Graffiti and litter-cleaning teams and street wardens from Easington District Council, joined by estate officers from East Durham Homes, took to the streets last week to tackle litter and fly-tipping hotspots.
During the five-day operation, they collected more than 78 tonnes of rubbish, the equivalent of more than 5,000 bags of litter and household waste.
Now the council has decided to continue the clean-up for three more days.
From Monday to Wednesday, crews will focus on problem areas in Peterlee, Seaham and Wheatley Hill.
As well as removing litter and items left by fly-tippers, the teams will be clearing weeds from public footpaths and sweeping roads and paths.
Officials from the DVLA will also be towing away abandoned cars on Monday and Wednesday.
