THE dangers of fire have been a burning issue at a County Durham school as staff and children get vital safety advice.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service's community safety team members, Ian Cockburn and Steve Smith, visited Barnard Castle School to offer advice and guidance on fire prevention.
The firefighters staged a court room scene based on a house blaze with pupils playing the parts of fireman, policeman, defendant, judge and jury.
Every year, more 400 people die in fatal fires across the UK, and chip pans, smoking materials, candles and electrical faults are the main causes.
"There is a lot of work to be done to make sure we prevent as many fires as possible," said Mr Cockburn.
Deputy headmaster Oliver Marlow said: "We take fire safety training very seriously in the school."
