A VILLAGE is brighter and safer thanks to a recently completed street lighting scheme.
Organised by the Communities First project, the scheme has seen the revamp of a lighting system in Wingate Road, leading in to Trimdon Station and Deaf Hill.
The refurbishment of the lighting has included the conversion of 15 yellow lanterns into white lighting, which has improved visibility along the main road into the villages.
The scheme was managed by Durham County Council and money to carry out the improvements was secured by the East Durham Local Strategic Partnership from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
The new scheme follows on from major streetlighting improvements in Trimdon Station and Deaf Hill last year.
Ken Wilson, of Communities First, said: "The street lighting improvements completed in early 2005 were well received by local people. However, at that time, funds were not available to make improvements in Wingate Road.''
But he added: "Funds have now been secured to do this work, which was completed earlier this month.
"These improvements will give greater levels of lighting for both motorists and pedestrians along this busy stretch of road.''
