Police investigating the horrific murder of a divorcee on a quiet estate near Durham City say people heading to work may have vital clues.
Linda Hewitt, 45, of Ryelands Way, Pity Me, on the outskirts of Durham City, was repeatedly stabbed by a man yards from her detached house at 7.30am on Thursday, in full of view of neighbours who were alerted by her screams.
A 47-year-old-man was arrested at the scene and is still being questioned by detectives at Durham City police station.
As door-to door enquiries continued today Detective Harry Stephenson said there had been a good response to appeals for information.
"People were passing through that estate on foot and in cars from about 7am who may have spotted things that could be important. "We'd like them to get in touch as a matter of urgency.''
People can call police direct on 0845 60 60 365 or, anonymously, through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Ms Hewitt worked for HM Revenue and Customs and has an 18-year-old son, James, who is studying for A Levels at Framwellgate School.
