About 300 soldiers from 9 Regiment Army Air Corps, based at RAF Dishforth, near Ripon, North Yorkshire, will be among the troops heading for Afghanistan.

The regiment will take eight Apache attack helicopters.

The mission will be the first time the helicopters have been used by the Army in combat. The unit will also supply four Lynx light utility helicopters.

Captain Rob Threapleton, regiment adjutant, said: "We have been warned that the regiment will be deployed to Afghanistan this year.

"We are training for that deployment as we speak.

"We have been training and developing the attack helicopter capabilities for the last two years at Dishforth.

"We are confident now, with our training and with the aircraft, that we will conduct ourselves professionally and in a very capable manner when we get out there."
