CHEMICALS and materials group Johnson Matthey announced yesterday that its Teesside division was winning more orders.

The company, which employs 450 people at the UK headquarters of its catalysts business in Billingham, revealed that sales in China and Japan were well up on last year, and diesel catalysts were fuelling growth in Europe.

Chief executive Neil Carson said: "Trading in the second half of Johnson Matthey's financial year is progressing in line with expectations.

"The catalysts division continues to perform well . . . benefiting from growth in diesel emission control products in Europe.

"Sales of catalysts for hydrogen generation and gas purification have been particularly strong.

"Overall, the outlook for the full year remains very much the same as we set out in our interim statement.

"Following an encouraging first half, we are expecting to achieve good growth in earnings for the year."
