Richmondshire District Council has pledged £28,000 to install sprinkler systems in the homes of elderly and disabled council tenants.
The council will spend a further £20,000 on carbon monoxide detectors.
Housing unit manager Colin Dales said: "Our target is to have a rolling programme installing domestic sprinklers in up to 20 houses a year."
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will contribute to both projects and will fit the carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke detectors have already been fitted into all council houses.
