PLAYING fields in Ferryhill have been given a much-needed boost with the planting of trees.

Mayor Julie Bainbridge joined members of Ferryhill's E-Caf to plant 24 trees on the King George V Playing Fields at the weekend.

The trees were bought with a grant from the Tree Council's Community Trees Fund.

It is hoped they will enhance the appearance of the playing fields and the surrounding residential area.

A spokesperson for Ferryhill Town Council said: "We were approached by the young people from the E-Caf who wanted to do something to brighten up the area.

"So we applied for the grant and they spent the day planting the trees. The mayor went along to offer her support.''

In the four years since the cafe opened, it has regularly attracted between 60 and 70 people.
