A WATER company has extended a council car park to thank workers for their patience during an £800,000 sewer revamp.

Yorkshire Water upgraded the sewers below the car park at County Hall, Northallerton, last year.

The company has now concreted over the area where its site cabins had been located to extend the car park.

Project manager Chris Freeman said: "When the scheme started we realised there would be disruption as County Hall is in a residential area and it added to the pressure of parking on the streets.

"It was an important scheme that will reduce the risk of flooding from public sewers during times of heavy rainfall, and as a thank-you to residents, council officers and members for their patience during the work, we have increased the size of the car park."

As well as constructing a retaining tank under the car park, engineers also enlarged the existing sewer beneath Broomfield Avenue, constructed a new sewer beneath Thornley Avenue and upgraded waste water pumping stations on Broomfield Avenue and Cleveland Drive.
