RAIL company GNER is to plough £32.5m into improvements for stations on the East Coast Main Line.
The company has agreed a loan with Barclays Bank to pay for improvements to stations on the Edinburgh to London line.
The works include:
l 900 extra car park spaces and an additional 400 covered cycle spaces at stations by the end of 2008;
* improved station signs and passenger information screens, including new screens at Newcastle Central Station Metro;
* automatic ticket barriers at Durham Station;
* extra and improved seating at stations;
* refurbished lounges, travel centres and toilets.
Work starts on a new travel centre at Durham station in the spring.
