THE search for the next generation of Ripon Cathedral choristers has received a welcome boost.

The Royal Masonic Trust has agreed to pay the cost of one child's education as a chorister.

The bursary includes 100 per cent funding for school fees, free tuition on two musical instruments and financial assistance for uniform and travel.

The announcement comes as the cathedral prepares for its latest auditions for choristers.

The bursary was last awarded in 2000, to 13-year-old Benjamin Kirk, Ripon Cathedral's head chorister.

He said: "I've really enjoyed being a cathedral chorister.

"It would have been difficult without the help of the Masonic Trust, so I'm really grateful to them.

"I'll always remember my time singing in the cathedral - it's a fantastic experience."

He will leave the choir in July for Christ's Hospital School, in Sussex, where he has won a scholarship.

Auditions for entry to the choir in September will be held on Saturday, February 4.

There are limited places available for both girls and boys. Choral scholarships are available.

Ripon Cathedral's director of music, Andrew Bryden, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the Royal Masonic Trust has decided to continue the award when Benjamin leaves.

"Despite the generous choral scholarships the cathedral offers, and possible further financial assistance available from the Choir School, the commitment can still be too much for some parents.

"This choral bursary means that anyone can have the opportunity to undertake the excellent musical training gained by being a cathedral chorister."
