RESIDENTS of a North-East town have backed plans for a direct rail service to London.
A petition, signed by 1,200 people, has been presented to Parliament by Hartlepool MP Iain Wright, supporting the link to the town.
The bid to run the service by Grand Central Trains is being considered by the rail regulator and a decision is expected within the next week.
Mr Wright said: "A direct rail link to the capital is hugely important for the economic development of the town.
"The decision is still wide open. But wide support from the people in the town could be the vital point.
"In just three days, I have been able to obtain over 1,200 names.
"This demonstrates the strength of feeling in Hartlepool, and I want Parliament to recognise this.
"Presenting the petition in the House of Commons will show the office of the rail regulator that the people of Hartlepool are keen to get the town moving."
