A BUS company is increasing security after a female passenger was injured when a brick was thrown at a bus.

The 21-year-old woman suffered minor injuries when a brick was thrown through the window of a bus she was travelling on near Seaham, County Durham, on January 13.

The incident took place at about 7.40pm as the Go Wear bus number 150 was travelling from Seaham to Ryhope.

As it drove along Stockton Road on a section of dual carriageway and passed under the old Ryhope Railway bridge, a brick was thrown at it.

It hit the upper floor windshield of the double-decker, smashing the glass and injuring the woman, who was left in shock.

Martin Harris, commercial director at Go North East buses, which runs the service, said: "Go North East works closely with police in all regions our buses operate.

"While these partnerships and the closed-circuit security cameras, which are installed on 75 per cent of our buses, decrease crime on the buses, vandals outside are harder to deter.

"We now have external facing cameras on an increasing number of buses, which will help catch the stone-throwers.

"We are pleased that there was no serious injury and will be working with the police to prevent incidents such as these happening in the future."

A police spokesman said it was an isolated incident, and has asked for witnesses to call 0191-454 7555 ext 66187.
