A LOCAL historian is giving an illustrated lecture as part of a former pit village's banner restoration celebrations.
Arthur Moyes, who wrote The Banner Book, will give a talk, called A Study of Mining Communities, in Bowburn Community Centre, Durham Road, Bowburn, on Friday, at 7pm.
The talk has been organised by the Bowburn Banner Group, which is restoring two of the village pit's lodge emblems and making a new one that will be paraded at the Durham Miners' Gala.
Mr Moyes was at one time custodian of the Bowburn banner, featuring the nurse Edith Cavell, who was shot by the Germans during the First World War.
The group plans to keep the restored banners on display in the community centre. The village is also celebrating its centenary this year.
Light refreshments will be served from 6.30pm and tickets for the event are free. They are available at the door or from the community centre on 0191-377 0571, Councillor Mike Syer on 0191-377 1491, or Councillor Dennis Morgan on 0191-377 0553.
