A company in the region has struck a deal to supply software to a US firm.
JBoss has made the deal with Newcastle's Arjuna Technologies for an undisclosed sum.
The tie-up will see the software, which enables financial transactions over the Internet, used around the world.
Arjuna chief executive Steve Caughey said: "While the software has always been judged to be technically excellent, the business case has always been an issue as our reach to market was limited," he said.
"Obviously, the more widely-used a software product is, the more confidence potential users will have in it.
"Therefore, the JBoss opportunity offered us a distribution channel into thousands of new businesses and we are delighted with the opportunity it creates."
Arjuna will also be offering consultancy and training for clients using the system.
Arjuna chief technology officer David Ingham said: "JBoss customers will require consultancy around the use and integration of the software. Arjuna's specialists will be able to provide this service. Additionally, Arjuna will become a JBoss certified partner and offer advanced training in the technology to JBoss customers."
