A COUNCIL initiative has reached a significant landmark in its schools' water safety education programme.
More than 100,000 children have now attended roadshows run by the Sunderland City Council team to promote water safety in schools throughout the city and district.
The Water Safety Initiative is now in its 12th year. The programme was established in September 1994 and, since then, 2,798 presentations have been made in primary schools to 100,999 children.
Delivered by qualified lifeguards, the programme is theoretical and practical and involves the children working as a team, acting out mock rescues and emergency action.
The training is important in Sunderland for it is a city by the sea, divided by a tidal river with 26 inland waterways.
The work of the dedicated team of lifeguards from the resort's office was highlighted in 2004 when ten-year-old Kate Wardell rescued her four-year-old brother from Silksworth Lake, using the techniques she had been taught at school by the water safety roadshow team.
The service is offered to schools free. For details, contact 0191-514 8443.
