A THREE-MONTH programme of underground power cable replacement starts in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, next week.

CE Electric UK, which distributes electricity through its subsidiary, Northern Electric Distribution Limited (NEDL), says it is upgrading the network to meet increasing demand for electricity

Work starts on Monday and is to be completed in early April.

The schedule for footpath excavation is from Monday to Sunday, February 5, the Mary Avenue end of Rosewood Terrace, continuing to Elisabeth Avenue and Ravensworth Road.

From February 6 to 26, Jones Street to Orchard Street, Birtley Lane to Harras Bank.

February 27 to March 12, Harras Bank and Durham Road, ending at Wilfred Street.

March 13 to 19, Durham Road leading on to Vigo Lane. When that section is completed there will be work until early April in Birtley Lane.

To ensure the safety of workmen and the public, temporary traffic lights will control traffic on Birtley Lane.

Information letters will be delivered to premises on the planned route.
