HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to take part in a scheme to turn their waste into garden compost this year.
Durham County Council is working with Wrap, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, to supply compost bins for £4, including delivery.
Councillor Brian Myers, cabinet member for waste management, said: "When you're tucking into your Sunday lunch, compost is probably the last thing on your mind.
"But potato peelings and carrot tops can easily be recycled to help make your garden flourish.
"Instead of throwing them away, peelings can be given a new lease of life in the compost bin where nature works its magic and transforms them into no-cost, top-of-the-range fertiliser to help you grow your own organic fruit and vegetables."
Anyone who wants to order a compost bin can call 0845 077 0757.
