Wearside League: Birtley Town, second from top, had to work hard for a 1-0 victory at home to Boldon CA. Tony Thirkell opened up an opportunity for Stephen Rochester and he made no mistake after just ten minutes and held on to take their place in the semi-finals.

Jarrow also made it through to the last four with a 2-1 victory at Annfield Plain.

Paul Knight and Ryan Houson had them two goals up before John Maughan threw the home side a lifeline but Jarrow remained in front.

Willington and Windscale may have the same number of points but the Cumbrians were the better side when they romped to a 4-0 victory in the Wearside League Cup at Hall Lane on Saturday.

A solitary John Donnelly goal separated the pair at half-time, but in the second period Windscale took control.

Howard Kirkbride struck within six minutes of the restart, and after Kevin Law made it three, Donnelly scored his second goal with three minutes remaining.

Leaders Cleadon SC saw off the challenge from third-placed Stokesley SC at Jack Clark Park. Fullback Brian Tulley, up for a corner, opened the scoring after just seven minutes.

Stokesley battled back and were always in with a chance until a lovely move ended with Danny Efford firing across the goalkeeper to wrap up the tie with ten minutes left.

In the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup, Coxhoe Athletic went out 4-2 to Cleator Moor Celtic.

The home side took the lead after just two minutes through Philip Best but their joy was shortlived as Gareth Evans and Darren Mohan struck back inside 15 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time, Mohan added a third goal for Cleator Moor and Gareth Evans increased their lead before Stephen Carruthers was on target for Coxhoe late in the game.

Nissan SSC Sunderland crashed 8-0 to Ryhope CW in the Wearside derby at the Nissan Sports Complex. The result was settled by the interval as Ryhope enjoyed a five-goal lead.

Paul Diamond was first to strike, Michael Pattison then rifled a hat-trick and Ryhope went nap with an own goal from Paul McAdam.

Diamond then completed his hat-trick and Chris Stanton added to the woes of Nissan.

In the League, Teesside Athletic moved into fourth position with a 5-0 victory at Harton and Westoe. James Kesterton was another player to score three times. His goals all came in the first 18 minutes. Stephen Hodgson and Michael Traynor then completed the rout.

Whitehaven put six past Gateshead Low Fell without reply. Malcolm Holliday and Robert Fowler both scored twice in the opening half and after Fowler completed his hat-trick, Craig Robson compounded the Tynesiders' misery.

New Marske and Ferryhill Athletic's game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
