Kyle Lafferty is keen to extend his stay at Darlington after scoring two goals in as many games since his switch from Burnley.

As one half of Quakers' new front pairing - fellow loanee Paul Hopkins is the other - Lafferty has begun his month on loan in great style by scoring in Saturday's 2-1 win over Peterborough United following his strike in last week's defeat at Notts County.

The goals continue an impressive run of form for the 18-year-old who has found the net on a regular basis this season at Turf Moor at reserve and youth level.

The Northern Ireland Under-19 international only signed his first professional contract in December and is keen for more first team action rather than return to the second string at Burnley.

"I am enjoying it here so far and the team is very good so I would be happy to stay a bit longer," said the Enniskillen-born teenager.

"Rather than just travelling with the first team squad at Burnley and playing for the reserves during the week it is better to be playing first team football.

"I did not expect it but it has been great to get off to such a good start. Last year I was not scoring that many because of injury but this year I have been banging them in.

"I have scored eight goals in ten reserve and youth team games at Burnley so I've carried on from there."

Hours before scoring the winner on Saturday Lafferty was named in a Northern Ireland Under-19 training squad which will meet for four days at Lileshall next month - beginning the day after his loan spell with Quakers is due to expire.

His boss at Burnley, Steve Cotterill, clearly has faith in the youngster as the contract he signed last month runs for two and a half years while the Clarets boss also gave him five appearances from the bench this season.

Keeping a close eye on his progress at the 96.6TFM Darlington Arena, Cotterill said: "We're delighted with Kyle scoring, it's just what we wanted Kyle to do.

"The mental side is different for him, even when he's played for us because there is nothing expected of him here.

"Now he has made a rod for his own back because he's started with two goals and the Darlington fans will expect that from him every week and rightly so.

"He's now going to endure some of the good pressures that I want him to have, with people expecting him to score goals and play well."

By joining Quakers on loan Lafferty missed out on the FA Youth Cup shock win for Burnley over Fulham last week and Cotterill added: "I'd rather he goes on loan there (Darlington) than be playing in the Youth Cup because the experience there will be excellent for him."
