ROYAL Mail bosses have paid tribute to a postman who died after being involved in a collision with a vehicle while getting out of his van to deliver mail.
The 47-year-old, who has not been named, was on his rounds near to the Board Inn, in Durham Road, Herrington, Sunderland, when a people- carrier collided with his van.
Passers-by rushed to his aid as paramedics were called.
The man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he died.
It is believed the postman was struck by a red Ford Galaxy, on Friday morning.
A 17-year-old was arrested at the scene and later released on bail by police officers, who have appealed for witnesses.
A mile-long stretch of the A690 was closed for four hours after the incident.
Bosses at the Royal Mail said colleagues had been shocked by the tragedy.
A spokesman said: "I can confirm that a Royal Mail employee at Sunderland delivery office died after being involved in a road traffic accident, which occurred while he was delivering mail.
"The police have been informed and we understand they are investigating.
"His colleagues are saddened to learn the tragic news and their thoughts are with his family at this time."
