HUNDREDS of schoolchildren across Sedgefield have caught the recycling bug.
Pupils at 22 schools in the borough are competing to recycle as many old Yellow Pages directories as possible.
They are taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge, run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust, Sedgefield Borough Council and the Butterwick Hospice.
The scheme also involves learning about recycling and the environment.
A total of £700 is available to the top schools, with the one that collects the most directories netting £300.
For every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust and Sedgefield Borough Council will award £100 to the school that makes the best sculpture out of their old directories.
Scheme mascot Kirk joined pupils at Ferryhill Station Primary School, winners of last year's challenge, to launch the Yellow Woods Challenge, which runs until March 3.
Residents are encouraged to give old editions to a participating school or recycle them at Sedgefield council paper banks.
