COUNCIL tenants are to get sprinkler systems and carbon monoxide detectors fitted in their homes.
Housing officers from Richmondshire District Council are asking members for £28,000 a year to be set aside for sprinklers.
The money would pay for 15 systems to be fitted in the homes of disabled tenants every year.
The request for cash follows a successful pilot project.
Colin Dales, housing unit manager, is also asking for £20,000 a year for three years to fit carbon monoxide detectors into all council homes.
Mr Dales said: "This proposal has been prompted by advice from the fire and rescue service and the Health and Safety Executive.
"Carbon monoxide poisoning remains a problem nationally, with an estimated 50 related deaths per year and 200 serious injuries."
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will contribute to both projects and will fit the carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke detectors have already been fitted into all council houses.
