A FORMER reservoir is to be demolished - but councillors have insisted that a neighbouring historical building is preserved.
The redundant site, in Sadberge, near Darlington, has been out of use for several years, and has increasingly been the target of vandalism.
Northumbria Water had applied for permission to demolish the whole 2.7 hectare site, and to landscape it to make it safe.
However, a planning committee of Darlington Borough Council yesterday insisted that the Pumping Tower, which was deemed to have local historical importance, must be preserved.
The application to demolish the reservoir was approved.
