FIRST TransPennine Express has followed GNER in introducing a range of low price, advance fares.
The rail operator, whose trains link the likes of Manchester and Leeds with Darlington, Middlesbrough and Newcastle, said savings of up to 40 per cent on off-peak services were available by booking in advance. The fares are available for travel in first-class and standard accommodation and are for services outside of peak travel.
Thomas Orr, pricing manager at First TPE, said: "These new fares represent great value for money.
"It's worth planning ahead, making your travel arrangements well in advance and taking advantage of the savings that can be made.
