AN arm-wrestling contest ended with a man carrying out a "frenzied attack" that left his opponent with 26 stab wounds, a court heard.
Alan Jones, 37, known as Bally, got the better of Wayne Gates, 30, during an arm-wrestling contest in Hogans bar, in Sunderland, on April 19.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how after being overpowered, Mr Gates made some "provocative remarks" and was asked to step outside by Mr Jones.
Christopher Knox, prosecuting, told the court how instead of the anticipated "fistycuffs", Mr Gates sunk a blade into his victim in what prosecutors describe as a "frenzied attack".
Mr Jones had knife wounds reaching from his ear to his abdomen, 19 of which were to his chest. His lung, kidney, liver and heart were all punctured by the blade.
The attack was captured on closed-circuit television outside the bar and jurors were shown the footage of Mr Gates - who fled abroad after the attack - launching the deadly blows.
Mr Gates, of Cato Street, Sunderland, denies murder.
The trial continues.
