ORGANISATIONS which go the extra mile to make sure they are accessible to all in County Durham could be in line for an award.
Durham County Council is launching its Access+ Award for those public and private sector groups which make a special effort for their clients.
The first awards will be presented in the summer and judges will look at access for all, and not simply focus on disability.
Examples of good practice could include signage and information in different formats and languages, easy physical access for wheelchairs or prams, family-friendly facilities, or locations that are easily accessible by public transport.
Nominations for the three categories - large organisations or businesses, small to medium enterprises, and individual projects - close on February 14.
Councillor Dennis Morgan, cabinet member with responsibility for equality and diversity, said: "We have run similar awards in the past, but now want to raise the profile and celebrate innovation and achievement by launching this new scheme."
Angela Hamilton, the council's access and equalities officer, said: "Legislation has led to improvements, such as ramps and widened doors for wheelchair users, prams and buggies, but now we are looking for those who have gone the extra mile to help people use their services.
"This could be by providing additional assistance, information in different languages and formats or by consulting customers about their needs."
