THE family of a mother-of-five who died in her smoke- filled bungalow have paid tribute to a loving woman with a huge sense of humour.

Carol Churchill, a widow, died from suspected smoke inhalation on Tuesday after a Christmas tree fire at her warden-controlled bungalow in Ellis Gardens, Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

The 56-year-old, who suffered from epilepsy and osteoporosis, is believed to have been overcome by fumes, but the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Mrs Churchill's sister, Sheila Meek, 49, of Osbourne Close, Hemlington, said the family was still in shock.

"She spent Christmas with us as usual and I last saw her on Boxing Day. We will all miss knowing that she is there because we were together practically every day," she said.

Her younger sister, Christine MacDonald, 45, of Roworth Road, Middlesbrough, said that Mrs Churchill's humour was a big part of her personality - as was her trademark laugh.

She said: "People always remember Carol for her laugh. It was a proper cackle, a really dirty laugh."

Mrs Churchill's body was found by Mrs Meek's husband, Alan, after the warden called to say she could not contact her on January 3.

One of her three dogs was found dead next to her, another has been rehomed, but a German Shepherd, called Zach needs a home. Call Waterfall Kennels, in Guisborough, on (01287) 634240, if you can help.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Teesside Coroner's Court.
