SCHOOLCHILDREN who helped to raise money for people with Motor Neurone Disease this week met a man who suffers from the condition.
Haughton Community School, in Darlington, held activities including a non-uniform day and staff contributed money instead of sending each other Christmas cards.
Students Samantha Beckham and Stacey Brocklebank helped to organise the school's fundraising efforts, after being inspired by Samantha's grandfather, Malcolm Pearce, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease a year ago.
Pupils and teachers met Mr Pearce and his wife, Jean, to learn more about the disease.
Christine Bell, from the school, praised the children's efforts. "Everyone here took part in raising money at the end of last term, just before Christmas, and responded really enthusiastically," she said.
"It was particularly close to Samantha's heart as her grandfather has the illness, and it was very nice for them to meet him.
"Although we have not got a total for the amount we raised yet, it is over £100. It is good we can help such a worthy cause."
