ONE new year may have only just started - but another is about to begin.

January 29 marks the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Dog - and the celebrations are expected to be spectacular and colourful.

Yesterday, Chinese students in York were at the city's National Centre for Early Music (NCEM), which is co-ordinating the local activities.

They were unwrapping some of the decorations that have been brought over from China especially for the local celebrations.

Activities and events will include a Chinese kites display, lion-dancing, Chinese opera and music and craft workshops.

The events will culminate in a family party in the Museum Gardens on January 29, at 3pm, featuring Korean dancers from the Choi Jung Im Dance Company and the lion-dancing dynamic troupe Oceans Apart, as well as Chinese craft stalls.

NCEM director Delma Tomlin said: "We have created some fantastic opportunities for everyone to get involved this year.

"This is the third year the city has staged New Year celebrations and we are delighted to have so many partners supporting us."

The festival begins on Saturday, January 14 and full details are available on the centre's website at www.ncem.co.uk. All ticketed events can be booked on (01904) 658338.
