COUNCIL staff are being encouraged to step up their fitness regimes by going for a short, guided walk during their lunch break.
Sedgefield Borough Council has launched a Walk into Work Out scheme in an attempt to improve staff's health and social well-being.
Walk co-ordinator Gemma Ryder said: "Not only do the walkers feel refreshed after the walk, but it also helps contribute to a healthier workforce and gives staff the opportunity to get away from their desks and socialise with colleagues."
Organisers say that a 30-minute walk during the lunch break can boost metabolism, relieve stress, strengthen the heart and lungs, and maintain good mental health.
The scheme also supports the council's travel plan which encourages employees to use different forms of transport including walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.
