A LUNCH club for older people in Derwentside has proved so popular it is going to meet twice as often.
Age Concern Consett Lunch Club is held fortnightly at Glenroyd house, in Medomsley Road. But organisers will soon be inviting people over 50 to join them every week.
Gwen Weston, 87, of East Law, Ebchester, who regularly attends the club and was at the Christmas party said: "I thoroughly enjoy coming out and mixing with people.
"It is a nice atmosphere and I have made quite a few friends and been very lucky and won three prizes in the raffle.
"It is nice to come out and enjoy life in general."
Ann Lumley, activities coordinator for St Mary's Convent, in Ebchester, said people living in homes also attended the club.
She said: "We try to get the ladies out as regularly as we can to keep them socialising and active. They all seem to really enjoy it.
"Gone are the days whenthey just sit around and stare at each other."
The club regularly has 20 people who enjoy sandwiches and light refreshments at cost price plus bingo and raffles.
The next Consett Lunch Club is on January 10, from 10am-1pm. Entry £1. Free tea and coffee.
